Transporter - how does it sound?

I saw lot's of discussion on the Transporter from back in July when it was announced/released. Has anyone bought one and used it? How does it sound? As compared to what?
My whole house CAL CL-10 is finally skipping too badly to tolerate, and I need a solution, ideally a wired Ethernet based DAC. Are there any real competitors to the Transporter? Media servers seem like a waste of money when I have several Linux boxes.
