This topic came up on another forum and those that were actually using ethernet over powerlines were unanimous that they detected no increase in spurious noises. Those that shared the opinion that powerline noises would result had not tried it and based their opinions on logical or theoretical grounds.
I've not found any online proof that the use of ethernet over powerlines causes an increase in noise but am willing to keep an open mind.
