At least some of the older 3.x models had clamped-off mids, e.g., the IIIA:

Anyway, the clamp ends before it hits the bottom, presumably to give the low bass segment more lebensraum. The clamp would then reduce IM distortion in the upper area, where you hear the direct higher frequency sound, and also tune the lateral resonance differently.

The 3.7 has a much more complicated arrangement which seems to put higher resonances between the midrange and the woofer, presumably to improve acoustical equalization and/or create an acoustical midbass coupler to improve power response to accommodate the lower order crossover. Not sure what a 3.6 looks like inside.
