Hi,
I have an early Mazda 2. I upgraded the suspension with a Bilstein coil-over kit and beefier anti-roll bars. Light wheels and better rubber.
Great handling little car and one of the lightest cars available. In 10 years I have only had to do one repair which is better that my wife's Honda Fit which has two things break. Not statistically valid stuff, I realize, and parts are fairly cheap on both.
I may move up to a Mazda 3 if I can get the engine/transmission combo I want.
If you get a car with a CVT (any brand) change the transmission fluid more often than recommended. Use OEM fluids. My experience with any car is that changing T-fluid improves shifting and smoothness.

Have fun.
John
