The Academy selects the films they are given with a given year.

I own the KEF LS-50 loudspeaker - this speaker is a good $1500 speaker - it is absolutely NOT more than that. Product of the Year in Stereophile - WTF?!? If that is the BEST damn speaker that came out (which it isn't it's just that they don't audition anything outside a horrible sounding show) then it's all bloody worthless.

Did you watch all 8 Academy Award nominated pictures? I did.

All 8 are wildly different films from each other. Even assuming people felt they were all 10/10 great films - they would still have to choose only ONE winner.

People are always pissed off their horse didn't come in first.

Personally I felt Black Panther is one of the least entertaining least fun comic book movies that came out - maybe ever. Given the source material COMIC BOOKS - if you are going to nominate one for Best Picture (and you probably shouldn't) then the movie should be somewhat fun. Umm Deadpool.

But the Academy isn't wholly about choosing the BEST film or the film that the voters like the best - it's also supposed to be about choosing the film that best represented the film industry - so then the political nature of Black Panther gives it a bucket of points.

Meh - the Oscars are just silly entertainment - always has been. Made to get people riled up about some film that didn't win or got overlooked. Then people start talking about it and people then go to see the film and the industry makes more money.

Look how many people bought the KEF LS-50 largely and solely on the strength of the press - and here in Hong Kong it's funny to see the second hand stores filled with the damn things.

And perhaps nominating Black Panther will get the non comic book movie viewer to then fork out some sort of cash to watch it. Or get someone who hates subtitles to see Roma - or someone who hates period piece movies to see The Favourite.
