Interesting post. I think the only thing you left out is the reality of recorded music. A microphone might be capable of the whole dynamic range of our hearing, but the microphone preamp will compress loud peaks. Also, there will be further compression one way or another before it ever makes it onto the CD, LP, whatever.

My point is that recorded music is always compressed and if you set the average listening level the same as the original event, the peaks will never reach the same level. Conversely, if you set the peak level the same as the original event, the average levels will be much higher than the original. The other thing to consider is that compression usually produces high second order harmonics, which makes it subjectively sound louder at the same output level.

There are just too many factors that make it impossible to reproduce music accurately at home.
