Horn choice is critical, as is crossover design

When I first heard the Faital 3FE22 (neodymium version of yours), I thought, oboy I could build a speaker around this little guy! However when comparing it to a good horn/compression driver combination, it quickly became obvious that the little Faital cone fell short in resolution. But it is quite remarkable for such an inexpensive driver.

Imo the horn you choose makes a huge difference. The SEOS horns are ime among the best on the market today. If you were getting poor results with SEOS horns, either there was a significant mis-match between the exit angle of the compression driver and the entry angle of the SEOS (12 degrees I believe), or your crossover was inadequate, or both.

Most horns (and all of the ones I like) require considerable equalization in addition to the actual highpass filter. I rely heavily on extensive measurements when designing crossovers for horn-loaded compression drivers. Ime they are far more challenging that crossovers for direct radiators, where you can often get decent results with a "cookbook" approach + several hours of fine-tuning by ear.

Today I use the 3FE22 as well as horn-loaded compression drivers in prosound designs. In every case where accuracy is a top priority, I go with the horn-loaded compression driver.
