Hello Duke -

Your description of "the little man playing a smaller second violin", or something like that, audible through supertweeters, sounds to me like you might be hearing the harmonic overtones that naturally occur in many violins, especially the ones used by the kind of players who would be making recordings. Many older violins will ring with harmonic overtones during certain notes - I'm not talking about the intentional playing of harmonics, but the high frequency harmonics that occur within the violin when certain notes are played. Up to a point, the ringing can be a good thing and in addition to adding a dimension to the sound it can help the player adjust intonation while playing. If the ringing becomes excessive it smears the sound and may be a problem with the set up of the violin. It is clearly audible, especially at close range, where many recordings are recorded. So maybe you are just hearing exceptionally good high frequency response from the speakers where you have heard this! The fact that you only hear this on violins, and only with very high extension tweeters, seems consistent with this theory.

Just a thought, anyway. Best Regards - Rob Downing
