I don't think your assumptions are correct and the comment above about cheaper DAC's is right. There are a bunch of very good sounding cheap DAC's out there.

I love McIntosh but you are paying a premium for the name. There is a pride of ownership thing and good resell but if your after a particular sound that suits the music and room, you could do better cheaper.

My suggestion is to try to swap out with different components and get a feel for the differences. If you don't have a spare DAC laying around, then try a tablet or a phone as a source, or a digital out on a CD /DVD player.
