Perhaps until we get to a Star Trek the Next Generation world where people set aside their greed for money and only vote for policy that they perceive will make them more money will things change - money was the means to an end but now is the end itself.

If you are at all familiar with Star Trek - I view the United States as Ferenginar. (Ferengi civilization was built on free enterprise, where earning profit was the sole meaningful goal in life, superseding all other endeavors.)

Alabama is certainly moving into that direction.

The character of Jean-Luc Picard was and probably still is Television's supreme Renaissance Man. The sort of person you elect president - gifted in all facets of academia, arts, religion, theater, history, music, and the sciences and highly ethical - he would give you his university transcripts or tax returns (oops - this is a quality society - no one pays taxes or does things for money).

This futuristic society was largely built on Dickensian vision of a near utopia for the planet.

Even today there is SOME hope because the people in society who matter historically - in a positive way will not be the E-Stat money grubbers of the world - it is not some guy in a suit on wall-street or the cities' billionaire. The people who MATTER in a society who are revered and remembered - are the scientists, the writers, the artists, the architects. Some business people will be remembered but not in a positive light - Henry Ford seems to be an American hero but the article below hardly paints a quality picture.

When the US elects people more like Picard and stop electing non readers and general dimwits you have a chance - and you did last time - so there is hope. Sometimes you have to hit bottom - the farmers who voted for the orangutan are now sorry they did - if enough of his voters go belly up (and we have to hope they ALL do) then maybe next time they will either vote correctly and just not vote - in either case that is a help. If you raise the min IQ to run for office to 110 and perhaps a minimum of 100 for voting that would also help.
