Morgan, I don't think there will ever be a consensus of opinion on the digital / analog question. For every one completely devoted to one format, there is someone equally devoted to the other. I have several LP's, most of which are very high quality pressings, and consequently expensive, that sound better than CD.s I have CD's that sound better than LP's. By this I mean the same artist and the same release, of course. There will always be recordings, regardless of the format, that are good, better, best in their sonic quality. As such, I would think it difficult to answer your question with an absolute. There will always be better recordings than others, whether analog or digital.

Rather than a CD player, I copy CD's to a server and use streaming primarily as a means to discover new music. I also use it to fulfill the request of someone visiting my audio room. Frankly, the sonics of a CD / Server arrangement yields far greater sonics on my system than streaming. But that is my opinion and based exclusively on my system, my interests and choices. Streaming is, for a huge number audiophiles, a wonderful outlet for music. The cost is far better than buying CD's. Depending on the system, streaming can sound wonderful or maybe not as good as a CD. Again, I see this as very system dependent and ultimately a matter of preference of the individual user. No choice is completely wrong or right.

As to LP's, I find it more difficult to find music I want to purchase compared to buying a CD. Because of too many instances where I was dissatisfied with the playback quality, I have pretty much stopped buying used LP's. Yet, I also have quite a few used LP's that sound fantastic. The used LP market is very hit and miss. In the end, I usually just buy new LP's. So the resultant availability goes down and the price goes up. I accept that and pay the price. Although I will admit it does hurt to fork over $40 dollars or more for an LP. In fact, quite a few of the LP's I purchased in the last two years are reprints of LP's I bought back in the 70's that didn't quite make it through college. Funny how dorm rooms have a habit of doing that!

My take on this is whatever works for you is the best way to proceed. This is a hobby about having fun listening to music. How that happens really doesn't matter. Only that it does.

Happy Listening
