I wanted to do something similar, but eventually just had a cable made which was a DIN going to XLRs. It bypasses the volume control, and gets the signal to the preamp using balanced connectors.
Is it truly a balanced signal?
No, but it works, and given that the Opus 21 is already a very well designed, and quite quiet CD Player, it works well enough for my purposes.

In case you're wondering, I had an Audience AU24 cable specially prepared (DIN --> XLRs) for this interconnect between my Opus 21 CDP and my VTL TL-6.5 preamp.
