I think your story is all too common. Optical disc players are mechanical devices, and they eventually fail for one reason or another. Unlike turntables, they are not easy to manufacture; and it seems that fewer companies are doing so -- especially because the computer industry has abandoned the optical drive.

So, it probably makes sense to prepare for the day when your optical drive fails.

As for the owning vs. streaming dilemma, I have yet to make the investment in high quality streaming and mass storage. But younger audiophiles than I (70) should consider that, unlike with vinyl records, the day will come when all those shiny discs will be unplayable -- not because they have deteriorated but because there's no device around that will play them.

BTW, there are services that will rip your SACDs to DSD files if you decide to go the NAS route and buy a DAC that plays DSD (as most seem to do these days).
