Without knowing the specific units a lot of this is difficult because better and more expensive with CD players isn't necessarily the same thing.
You have to know what transport mechanism is used in the CD player and even then there is more to the thing than just the mechanism being used. It depends on the output stage of the CD player or transport.
I recently reviewed the Cambridge Audio CXC Transport at $449 which is a very good performer at this price as a dedicated transport it has no DAC on board. But you could likely get similar performance from a good CD player being used as a transport - it depends what it is.
If you want a high end transport you probably want a machine with the Pro 2LF mechanism or the CEC belt drives - arguably these are a major cut above everything else.
They are NOT cheap as the mechanism from Philips is $500 cost to buy and they have not been made for several years.
This list provides the CD players and transports on the market and which mechanism that they use including many Arcam units.
I probably would not change your CD player unless the new one you want to get is using one of the premium mechanisms - or is a dedicated transport that may have better outputs.

Transports absolutely make a difference, I've heard it here. - oldmkvi 10:20:56 03/19/19 ( 1)
