They can all be right, all of the time, since there is no single type of human. Our lives, experiences, aural cortices, the very geography of our very ears and ear canals are all different in subtle and not so subtle ways. I believe that this is our *strength* as a species and plural entity, not our weakness. Certainly true in the cultural sphere. And frankly, progress - for the sake of it - is mildly sociopathic. Who benefits here? Are we building better humans? Better lives?

Fair enough, explore, develop, chase the 'digital dragon'. Truly, I am not against any of that, per se. It will feature in our (near) future. But perhaps it might be useful to inject some perspective into things, at this point. If we're not enjoying it all, why on earth are we doing it?

As I've said elsewhere on AA, if we're not careful we'll find that audiophilia, as an interest or hobby, is dangerously close to disappearing up its own, hugely oversampled fundament. Companies seem to want us to tack further away from music, performance, meaningful shared experiences and engagement at a human scale - and toward some gargantuan, privately-owned, digital library of Babel. They benefit. Do we?
