Ever-shifting digital sands.

To be fair, I struggle to keep up with the digital replay narrative and find my efforts are impeded by the seemingly ever-changing standards and protocols of both consumer digital and the concomitant delivery systems. Have not tried Qobuz yet, but am trying Tidal (Hifi) and Spotify Premium (our children are happy about that one).

A while ago (perhaps 10 years), the seemingly confusing nature of digital fidelity led me to re-prioritise on seeking digital replay systems that sought minimal interference with source material. I begun to learn that DRM might be an additional point of harassment.

My streaming is currently limited to my MacBook (not connected to our hifi) and to my new mobile (LG V30). Even there, one finds a can of worms regarding resampling of native sample rates, delivery bitrates and so on, ad nauseam. Thus detecting what audible effect are the result of what processes is a minefield. More than that, it is just tiresome and has me buying records instead.

My interest was aroused as I'm a keen fan of ECM (like many around here) and many of its artists, and ECM have seemingly always sought to prioritise audio quality. There are clear marketing imperatives these days which require companies to share their wares online, but I hold out hope that they have found a transparent process for this library which limits the audible interference of any DRM applied.
