Well, i just listened to the cambridge 840a/c combo and the rega and I have to say I don't think the 840 would be a clear upgrade. It's different, but I wouldn't say better. The 840 is more forward in the midrange and I got the sense it might be a little fatiguing over time. I agree for $1k you'd be hard pressed to find a clear upgrade. You could definitely do different, which might be what you want...

You might take a listen to the Simaudio cd-1, it is $1499 and to my ears a little better than the Apollo. Sense of rhythm is better, more sparkle in the highs, not quite as warm as the rega but also not too forward or fatiguing.
