Among other Cds 2 piano versions of Mussorgsky's "Pictures at an Exhibition" arrived.

The first was a well reviewed one sampled was played by Paul Lewis. Yes competently played, but no real surprises. That came when I started listening to the same work played unconventionally by Georgian pianist Khatia Buniatishvili - WOW!!!!

Promenade was slow and meanndering, nicely evoking the mood of someone wandering around an exhibition until they suddenly came upon a picture of interest. And that is when Kharia's playing becomes very emotive and different. The music becomes very alive and much more descriptive than is usually achieved by other players. I guess her approach might irritate some people and be criticised as not adhering to what the composer wrote or intended. But for me it is a relevation.

And I should add the Audio Quality is exceptionally good, something very important to idiots like myself who have spent far too much on quality gear. This sensational CD is highly recommended.

John
