Your post illustrates perfectly just how subjective is appraisal of music.

I often feel that criticism of raspy/shrill strings on recordings is more a reflection of poor digital -> analog processing (yes on my DAC hobby horse again but I won't let it gallop!) than is a valid criticism of the actual recording. And yes, I'm on record of making this complaint about recording in the past and initially hated anything digital because of it. It does seem that digital recordings were thrust upon the public before the technology was fully available to process it properly. Recordings were just so much easier for the engineers, any difficulties in playback were not considered seriously enough.

And modern technology has made listening to older recordings more challenging for me. So, I'll still stick to this Tchaikovsky 6th as the best one for me, but of course that is obviously not the case for everyone. Horses (particularly hobby ones) for courses!!!
