The admittedly "amazing" passages in Faust--some of which indeed inspired generations of later composers--are IMHO overshadowed by endless repetition and note-spinning of frankly far less inspired material.

Would I have been proud to write the piece? Of course! But IMHO its glaring unevenness/inconsistency is frustrating and I humbly don't believe Faust stands on its own today -- in the face of what came after -- in the same way that, say, Beethoven's 9th still sounds fresh and new in the shadow of its own offspring, the Mahler 2nd among others.

I guess what I'm saying is that too much of Faust sounds a bit too "longueurs" in the tooth these days. : )

You may have the last word. Also, I know you're a new member but would you mind using Youtube and cueing-up and particular passage or passages within Faust that you find amazing? I've learned to appreciate many a piece when a friendly tour-guide highlights their favorite moments.
