i have lately been installing different DACs in
different systems to judge sound quality. i'm no
golden ears but do have preferences.
i was then thinking about how i was judging the sounds
with reference to what i can remember (or imagine ) what
different instruments 'sound' like. i'm not a musician, so
based on memories only.
but started to think of the different timbre of some instruments.
like a bassoon on playback. then a guitar-- i've heard in the past
classical guitars played with gut strings in a small club setting.
different from steel strings.
so musing forward it occurred to me that a piano is a wooden instrument.
so.. why are grand pianos most frequently played with the top up?
the most obvious reason is to fill a concert hall. but in a small
venue or perhaps in your own home, does your piano sound different
to you?? does closing the box sound different??
was watching movie Ray (charles) noting that most players in juke joints and small clubs routinuely played upright pianos with top down
