When I upgraded from an older M&K sub with a hardwired pc to a Hsu VTF-5 Mk. II, I didn't even try it with the stock cord. Instead, I initially put on a diy Furutech FP-S032N (12AWG) and it worked fine. I needed to pull the Furutech for another component and put on an Audience Forte f3 (10 AWG) and it works very well. I honestly can't say if the heavier gauge made an audible difference, but I lean toward heavier gauges for certain applications such as amp, power conditioner, and sub. I put Neotech plugs on the Furutech, but if you go the diy route, for a sub, you may not need to go upscale. For a sub, I don't think you have to get too extravagant on a pc. DH Labs, in addition to Audience, is also American and fairly small. They may have something to your liking.
