The wires are the same, although they are connect differently. On an XLR connection there is Phase correct wire, Phase inverted wire and ground wire(usually the shield. On XLR apps the ground is connected at both ends. In RCA apps the ground is connected only at one end, usually the source side. The othe two wires become the positive and negative runs.
