I don't know where that reviewer was getting his common wisdom "in the 1970s...and quite a while after that", but that certainly wasn't the opinion of the magazines I was reading, like Absolute Sound, or the audio stores I was going to.

It sounds like he was reading Julian Hersh and shopping at mid-fi shops. Had he worded his comment as "I was under the misunderstanding...", that's one thing, but to say it was common wisdom of that era is simply wrong.
