Jud Barber went back to a similar type arrangement in his later Joule-Electra preamps! The LA-300ME for example has a inexpensive motorized potentiometer (only the motor part is connected) mounted inside the chassis next to the main/actual high quality volume control. There is a belt that goes from the motorized controls shaft right behind the front faceplate to a donut mounted to the volume control's shaft just behind the knob. A spare belt can also be found inside these preamps tape to the side of the chassis for when the old belt starts slipping too much or breaks.
