Many thanks to everyone for taking the time to reply to me, I am surprised by the generosity of my fellow music lovers taking the time to help another. As Charles Hansen suggested I unplugged the t/t from the phono stage with the volume down and it was much as he suspected it would be. On my Ayre pre I tend to listen at between 30 and 40 on its numeric volume display. As I turned the volume up to 40 the hissing was exactly the same as I can hear when my t/t is connected to the phono stage. There was also some hum with the t/t unconnected to the phono, but the hiss is at the same level, rising and falling with the volume level. So this points to the new wiring being at fault or at least not correct.
I was going to move on to a moving coil catridge soon anyway, so once I have sorted the wiring that will be the way forward. I'll get this done and let you know the outcome. Many thanks again Rob
