I considered purchasing a Walker myself. I went the other direction instead. I bought a heavily modified Scully reel deck and have paid dearly for 300 or so master reels. I also found that there is no one headstack that works well for every recording, so I have 14 different headstacks with various head spacing, designed for different tape speeds (15 and 30 IPS), etc.

Open reel tape is a complete pain in the ***, but oh so worth it, IMO. The lack of software is a concern, but for now I'm quite pleased.
