You need a high quality digital recorder like an Alesis ML-9600 with high resolution (24/96) capability. They cost only $900 and have balanced I/O, so compared to the price of your other equipment they are truly cheap. However, you can capture the sound of your turntable/tonearm/cartridge/preamp exactly using this cheap piece of equipment. It will burn Redbook CDs, which might actually be all that is needed for comparison, but it will also burn high resolution 24/96 CDs that are playable on the ML-9600. If you don’t own one of these, you might want to pick one up because they provide an excellent way to compare cartridges, too. If you do have a digital recording capability, it might be interesting to compare the sound of your new record player with others by exchanging CD-Rs of the same LP. If you’re interested, let me know.

Best regards,
John Elison
