Thanks for this interesting post, but I feel that you are overstimating the heating problem.
I am using two 55 liters enclosures with Seas Excel 10" magnesium woofers to supplement the low frequencies of bookshelves (with Yamaha digital crossover between them).
With the Scan Speak 5-3/4", the difference of depth and quality of the low part of the spectrum (let's say, below 100Hz) is amazingly small, barely perceptible, despite the fact that:
- They have less than a third of the surface cone
- Approx. one fifth of the internal volume to load them
- My living room is very large (around 8,000 cubic feet)

I must admit, though, that the Scan Speal 10" are also low efficiency, and that one of my first DIY project was made withb Cabasse 12" woofers with an efficiency of 95 db/w and, depite a F-3 of around 55 Hz, sounded very, very good in the bass.

Cheers,

Yves
