I have stated repeatedly not to settle for the ugly utilitarian black finish. Especially if you're going to invest in top-notch stands, bases, and racks like those from Sound Anchors, spend a little more to get them in the color and/or finish of your choice. IIRC, the high gloss white finish on my Sound Anchors stands was just $50 extra. I think my inspiration was seeing a white stand under the mahogany Totem Model One Signature -- what a yummy sight! But you are right; correctly implemented Sound Anchors stands will allow your speakers to perform at their best. By that I mean that they will more accurately reflect what you feed them. All else being equal, you will not experience a scrunched up bass, an uneven transition from midrange to treble, and a collapsed and muddled soundstage.
I really have a hard tme putting this next thought into words. Yes, these custom stands are expensive. However, I have found them to be good long-term investment. If you get the right stand you will (1) maximize sonics, and (b) make the whole thing aesthetically pleasing. By combining (1) and (2), you end up with a speaker that provides long term pleasure. Thus, you've gone a long way towards killing audiophilia nervosa. You will be less inclined to replace your speakers.
