My last power amp was a Bryston 4BST. Over the years I've heard Levinsons, McIntoshes, Proceeds, Rotels and a few others at stores. The Levinsons were fine amps, no question, but out of my budget. The Proceeds were good, but I thought the Brystons were smoother, if not as well defined. Mcintoshes were fine amps and looked pretty spiffy, but kind of pricey, Rotels were ok. Unfortunately I haven't heard Conrad Johnson tubes or the Pass Alephs or the Plinius or Marsh or the new Quads;I suspect the new MFs would share some qualities with them. Tellig in the latest Sterophile compares a McCormack model to the A3 and the A3 comes out ahead in some important ways, but not all. Depends on your speakers and what you like, I guess.
