I can't agree. Yes, I like live performances. But music is music, whether I listen to it at a concert hall, or on my system at home, or in the car.

In the case of live music, much depends on opportunity, e.g., I rarely hear it today because I no longer live near it; when I lived in New York, I heard it rather frequently. It also depends on age -- older people are more apt to go to concerts than younger ones, classical concerts, anyway, but that doesn't mean they don't listen to music at home -- the evidence I've seen says they do.

As to what people discuss at shows, well, I probably wouldn't talk about audio gear in a concert hall lobby, so I'm not sure why people would spend much time discussing music at a show devoted to audio gear.

I think it's generally best just to ask people what they like and what's meaningful to them, rather than using secondary indicators of the "you don't do this so you can't possibly be" sort that don't really mean very much. Another one I've seen is "you can't possibly love music if you don't play an instrument."
