BTW, the "spend more on music than equipment" is a good rough piece of guidance but doesn't work at the really expensive end of the hobby. A music lover who still likes good sound may spend $50K on a pair of speakers that will not be replaced for years (my own pair of less expensive speakers were bought in 1994). But I'll bet that in the year of purchase he didn't spend $51K on recordings - if he did then he wouldn't have time to listen to them all.
Music and good sound are not mutually exclusive although the latter is only the medium and not the message.
