IMHO, it is a level of commitment

I think audiophiles like music. In my experience with them, they like to listen to it at home over their audio systems. They like to shop for it. They like collecting records and discs. But they don't care or like it enough to go see it live, or experience it with other people. I've attended a number of audio gatherings, and while there is no shortage of discussions regarding such and such new recording or piece of equipment, there is, save one conversation about a fellow 'phile who liked to travel to see the Grateful Dead, no conversation about live music and concerts.

IMHO you demonstrate commitment by working for something, and that includes getting off the rear end, getting in the car, and driving to a venue to hear live music. They don't yet come to the listener. We have a great local jazz club, and yet I've never seen jazz loving audiophiles attend a show. Hell, one such denizen wrote on a board that our 'burgh lacks any meaningful music scene - despite the fact that our local jazz club features more live music than any venue East of the Mississippi, an annual three day music festival featuring approximately 75 musicians and bands, many local, performing original music, two annual blues festivals, and a significant number of small clubs all featuring local musicians playing original, live music, of virtually every musical genre.

So, yea, I think by and large audiophiles love music. As long as it is played over their systems in the comfort of their own homes where it comes to them rather than them going to it, and where they do not have to deal with other people. Like I said, I think it is a level of commitment, sort of like the girl you say you really love, but she kept wanting you to go to her place, so the relationship fell apart.

IMHO the person who regularly sees live music is the music lover. Many music lovers who have the means also value high performance audio, and want some measure of fidelity at home. Do you know someone who frequents live music venues who is not a music lover, first and foremost? I don't. I do know audiophiles who I suspect would not enjoy music but for high end audio. Are they music lovers? I don't think so. We probably have all known audiophiles who have expensive systems but only a select few audiophile recordings.

Some years ago John Atkinson, in attempting to distinguish the music loving audiophile from the audiophile posited a spending ratio between their record collection and their equipment collection. I wonder if this may be adapted to include the money they spend on cover charges and tickets.
