In my experience, some music lovers really care nothing for the playback equipment or any perceived level of fidelity. There are two categories of speakers to them: 1) Simple - i.e. built-in laptop speakers, and 2) Loud - something of making enough noise to fill a room, like a $30 set of computer speakers. Anything larger or more expensive than this, in their eyes, is "shiny", but not necessary by any stretch. A music lover of this type can deeply care for outstanding composition, intricate groove, or defining lyrics without ever venturing into the realm of audible improvements.

Of course, there are many music lovers who do have fantastic systems. What separates these folk from audiophiles, in my perception, is that the music lovers would focus on the end result, not the process. Audiophiles, on the other hand, generally enjoy understanding the process of making good sound, and also of the pursuit of better components. Some enjoy this to the point they lose sight of the music because they are so focused on the technical aspects. I do not think this is wrong; technical hobbies are perfectly acceptable and can be thoroughly enjoyable. However, I wonder why the audiophile in this position wouldn't choose a less expensive technical hobby, haha.
