RE: Tonearm materials & profiles

Jim,
My hypothesis is that with a very short wand there are only modest differences between various materials and laminates. This is largely acknowledged w/r to hardwoods in above Reed tonearm thread. Apparently with Reed the distinct character of each hardwood is "best" revealed as arm length increases from 9" to 12". One would suppose that such differences on a really short arm like Trans-Fi are minimal. However, there was notable improvement when moving from Trans-Fi's round tube CF wand to his Tomahawk alum flat wand. My guess is that this was mostly due to advantages of the flat profile(or possibly the point bearings as compared to the prior knife pivot bearings.)
Now that the flat profile and point bearings are "preferred", it will be interesting to try more composites and add hardwoods to the mix.
