THE word LIST HAS BOLD-FACED TYPE FOR EACH ARTIST, MAKING IT VERY EASY TO READ.

"Empyrean Isles" BN 84125 Players: Hubbard, Coleman, Carter, Williams, Hancock. Herbie Hancock: "Maiden Voyage", Blue Note 84195 Stereo. This pressing is from 1965 available in both mono (4195) and stereo (84195) one source on Blue Notes suggests that the quality of recordings started downhill shortly after 1965. This implies that first issues are the ones to search for.
In general, I've found the Blue Note reissue series from the late 70s-early 80s to sound fine, especially for the money they're worth ($5 or so each). Classic BN titles that'd cost big bucks if you could find the originals. Downside is the covers are not the original art, but some nice pictures, obviously not what you'd expect.

Sarah Vaughn on Emarcy; not as common as Ella on Verve, but great music and sonics. Mercury era Sarah is just ok in comparison.

Any of the Steeplechase studio recordings, especially those engineered by Jim Anderson. I have a number by musicians such as Paul Bley, Junior Cook, Walter Davis, & Bill Hardman. The live sessions are quite variable in sonics, although some of the performances by the likes of Dexter Gordon and Bud Powell can be terrific.
Verve, Blue Note and Pablo labels almost guarantee good music and sound. The Blue notes are expensive on the used market, though. The later Blue Note DMM's are not the same thing at all. Several I have purchased are less than stellar sound and performance. Maybe worth a flier if in the budget rack.
Any of the Fantasy OJC reissues of material from Prestige or Riverside. Particularly, Miles Davis, Thelonious Monk, John Coltrane, Art Blakey, Bill Evans, Chet Baker.
Jazz West Coast compilations vol. 1-3 / Pacific Jazz or World Pacific labels. Good overview of the Pacific Jazz label from the mid 50's. More common than the individual albums they were taken from and these compilations tend to be cheap.
“Blue Note Gems of Jazz” There were 2 compilations put out in the mid 60's to commemorate their 25th anniversary. GREAT music, cheap prices because it is a compilation.
Most of the "Gatefold" cover Impulse releases from the early 60's when Impulse was a serious Jazz label.
Maxell “Jazz sampler - Vol. 1”
“Smithsonian Collection of Classic Jazz.” This 6-LP set pressed by Columbia records contains works from most major artists from Scott Joplin to Ornette Coleman, including alternate takes from Bird, and Monk's blues improvisation from "Bag's Groove" by the Miles Davis All Stars. While the recording quality on some of the cuts is not “audiophile” quality, it would be a grave injustice not to name this very important piece of educational material.
Earlier Riverside and Prestige pressings are also quite good. Wes Montgomery has some good stuff.
ECM LPs are also a good series of issues; the sound is a bit “hot” but lively. (Al Jarreau, Keith Jarrett,
the Art Ensamble of Chicago (urban Bushman e.g)
OJC Jazz re-issues are very good. They again were re-issued in Germany 90's now these do seem a little thin sounding/less body.
