But there's an escape route...

Rip your CDs to lossless files and play them with the best sounding "computer audio" setup you can muster.

I've been enjoying a dedicated "music PC" using Window 7 and deliberately configured to be very "quiet"- very few bus interrupts, software update queries, that sort of thing. A small SSD inside plus a large external HDD work well. I got professional help to add the SSD and configure the PC; well worth the cost! It's very quiet acoustically, using the little fan speed control app to turn them down to nearly zero, with no ill effects. The small form-factor desktop sits in my record cabinet purring away year after year. Total cost with a USB-S/PDIF DDC and cables about $300. I wish every $300 I've blown on my HiFi gave me this much pleasure and performance!

To my fuzzy ears it sounds INDISTINGUISHABLE from my CD player. Apparently the determinants of performance are the S/PDIF coax cabling, transmitter / receiver, and the DACs in my preamp. I have noted a bit better sound from CDs on my new universal disc player via Toslink to the preamp however, but I suspect its a manifestation of a fortuitous optical transmitter / receiver matchup and the fine glass Toslink I splurged on.

I have to stop here-- any further discussions will certainly be downgraded to the digital asylum pages! My only defence is that I'm a staunch vinylista Bear, limping through digital miasma trying to make the best of it!
