Request for help regarding cart - cable compatibility
Posted by Basher52 on March 16, 2017 at 08:36:43:
Could one of the Inmates knowledgeable in electrical engineering off some assistance with the question below?
I've been using a Soundsmith Aida in an SME 309 arm with it's stock 1.2 meter length Van Den Hul D-501 'mono-crystal' DIN-RCA interconnect. With due care to alignment set-up, the Aida produces marvelously musical sound with natural, unforced detail. However from the upper mids through the top end there seems to be a roll-off. The Aida spec sheet lists load capacitance as 100 pF "internally compensated".
The spec on the D-501 cable is published as :
* capacitance between the 2 signal leads is: 75 pF/meter.
* resistance per signal lead is: 11.3 Ohm/100 meter.
Is there an electrical mismatch between the Aida cart and VdH D-501 cable? Or am I mostly hearing characteristics of the cable?
I ask this because readings about Soundsmith carts in general have no reference to a suppressed top end, my previous Van Den Hul MC-One cart had plenty of treble output with the VdH D-501 cable and also most telling, if I switch the 309 arm to an old AudioQuest 'Lapis' cable (silver wire) which had a capacitance around 49pF per meter (resistance unknown)then the Aida top end is significantly more expressive and the bottom end tightens up.
With appreciation,
