What are some general sonic characteristics of field coils?

I am currently re-constructing my system starting with the speakers. My recent research has left me very intrigued with field coils. I know that Shindo (a company whose amplifiers I already have great respect for) and Steve Schell, whose products I have not heard, are currently utilizing this "old school" method, any others? I know Shindo's drivers are old Altec's, some of which I already love, which are completely modified and re-machined and given the needed power supply. Advantages in magnetic flux etc. seem apparent from a technical point of view. Unfortunately, I have read few if any reports on actual sonics from anyone besides Shindo's US importer's site and Schell's postings here. What are some typical qualities of a well-executed field coil? Do inmates feel it is wise to use a full-range field coil, or is two-way--Shindo offers both-- more advisable?
The main areas in which I question their performance is solidity and life-like size of soundstage, imaging, and performance in both frequency extremes. Thanks for any help.
