I think somehting is wrong ...

I sold Snell for many years, some of them along side the L36, and have owned several different models. They don't sound veiled ...none of them.

My brother-in-law has my old J's and uses them a 70's era Technics receiver and they sound open, detailed and punchy.

Something might be amiss in your J's. Its only my opinion, but the J's should at least keep up with your ARs and JBL's, if not sound better.
