I used (4) 5/8" rod's and (2) 1 1/4 MDF slabs laminated together for a 2 1/2" thick shelf. With 4 shelves, it weighs a ton, and steady as a rock. I used PVC plumbing pipe end caps over the nuts on the botton, so it slides easily. Same on the top so I can level the glass shelf on top if required.
