A "reputation" is simply something acquired by other people having experience with that individual or organization. If you ignore someone's reputation you are ignoring a source of information that is rather foolish to ignore.
Second, I don't depend on what some "guru" says about anything. Does the opinion of someone who has a good "reputation" have influence in my information gathering? Of course.
And I think you did attack his character. Look at what you said. You basically stated that he was petty and jealous for not being involved in the development of Tripath technology. If that isn't an attack on his character what is?
