gear ordered. Now the problem is how to remove it

I just ordered the gear and it'll hopefully come in in two weeks.
Now, I guess the issue is how I can remove the gear and the things (mostly that bigger pulley) around it to do the replacement. On close inspection, it appears that there is a little metal ring/retainer at the top of the spindle of the pulley. How do you guys suggest I should remove the pulley? Does it look like a simple (and somewhat forceful) pull, or should it be something more elegant like unscrewing?
