Doing little certainly wasn't my experience, if anything they did too much.
I saw them demonstrated at a Stereophile show and thought I'd give them a try on my Infinity Q3 speakers. I put them on the back behind the woofer and man they just changed the whole character of the speaker. Made them 'tighter' but they didn't go as deep. Eventually I ended up not using them simply because I preferred the bass better without them.
The amazing thing was the extent of the affect, even though the panels were quite thick I could still feel some vibration on them and apparently they radiated quite a lot despite the surely small displacement. Speakers are mysterious things.
