maybe I have an idea - if you have inserted much additional capacity, the el.lytics can give high + short peak currents when recharging. Too much for the transformer your amp was designed with.
So your 4mH could be there managing just these very short, high current peaks drawn by your battery of capacitance- in case you did not use resistors or whatever to control these peaks
