Re: How to Use a Battery Power Supply on a CD Player?

Posted by Sherwood on May 5, 1999 at 11:10:43:

Hi Michael,

Sorry you're not getting much response on this query.

If your system is revealing enough, you may hear an improvement with battery supply..... I don't know. It depends on the effort the designer put forth in filtering the rectified AC input from the wall socket.

First we need to know what voltages are required for your particular CD player/transport and then, how much current each supply will draw. With that information, a battery pack can be configured. Where will it reside ? 'Depends on how big the battery supply ends up and..............
Will you be charging these batteries external to the system or will you be building a charger that resides within the unit and turns ON when the CD player is turned OFF. Will you require a monitoring circuit to automatically shut down the transport when the batteries get low ?

As you can see, it could be a can of worms to be properly implemented, and a seperate chassis for the supply/charger might be indicated. I personally know of no unit designed to universally adapt to different brands of CD machines.

In other words, it won't be a plug and play deal.

There are, however, mods that can be done to the existing power supply (if it is not already a good design) that may be easier to perform and much less expensive. Someone would have to sit down with a schematic of your unit and do some experimenting and fiddleing around. There are a few fella's out there that have already worked out upgrades (which usually include changeing DAC's and output devices) to specific makes and models...... I don't have a list of them, but inquiries could be made here and on other hi-end groups?

Good luck,
john
