Nature's way of telling you to hire an electrician

Posted by Al Sekela on June 10, 2005 at 14:07:07:

before your house burns down!

Connecting the neutral to the ground at the outlet is a no-no. There may be a problem in one or the other conductor upstream from this outlet.

The use of the outlet device as a connector for wires that go on to other outlets may or may not pass present-day code, but it is definitely a bad idea for audio. If you have any other such outlets in the chain prior to your audio system, then all the current for your system is passing through the little snap-off metal tabs on the sides of the outlets.

It may be tempting to just have some dedicated circuits installed and ignore the rest, but your safety is more important than your audio performance. I strongly recommend having a couple of electricians examine your situation and quote on fixing all the problems. Getting several dedicated lines installed as part of the package will reduce their cost considerably.
