The power tranny problem of the W-5M is easy to fix. The first electrlytic filtering stage in the power supply has 20 mFd's following a 5R4 rectifier, which is rated for only 4 mFd. Reduce the capacitance of this first stage to around 4 mFd and add much more to the stages following the choke will take a lot of the stress off the power tranny. The transformer will run much cooler as well.
Converting the output stage to triode mode will reduce output power and should help protect the output tranny and sound better. A good amp made much better.
