Re: 12AT7A dual triode....recommendations?

Posted by Willie the Squid on October 9, 2000 at 17:09:39:

I have seen some Asylum members say bad things about the 12at7 tube and its family.

That's not my experience.

I use a pair of these tubes in the (hybred) phono section of a Tara Passage pre-amp designed by Allen Wright. See the following story if you're interested. http://www.vacuumstate.com/joesfvp.htm#Introduction

I didn't particularly like the GE 5 star 6201 or the RCA 12at7s. I didn't leave either pair in the pre-amp for very long because....basically uninspiring.

I liked the Telefunken 12at7 -- big energy but a little tizzy up top. I've not heard a pair of ECC801S -- but $100 per tube is too rich for my blood in any event.

I really liked the Mullard 6201 and it was my reference for almost a year. So very musical.

Recently replaced with Sylvania Gold Brand 6201. A little cleaner with better definition on the bottom -- but loses none of the warmth that I enjoy in the Mullard tube. This is my current favorite.

I have a pair of Brimar that I've yet to listen to...I'll try in the next week and report.
